Quebec Open 2008

Club Atwater

The Club Atwater Committee were very pleased with the turnout considering the event was only picked up last minute. Thank you to Howie and Rhona Schwartz for keeping the ship steady all weekend.

All divisions were fiercly contested with Club Atwater members winning 4 of the 7 titles on offer. The mens B final with Mario Gagnon and Benoit Teriault was one of the best finals of the day. In a see saw affair Benoit pulled out the win with a hard fought 9/7 in the 5th victory in a match that was close to the 90min mark. A special mention to the mens D finalists Farokh Sarmad and Jarrett Aschen. Both players never say die attitude and commitment to run everything down had the crowd cheering each of them on and in the end the younger legs of Sarmad finally pulled him through winning 9/6 in the 5th. Val Mancini held off the late charging Shawn Fillion in the Mens C final. A little experience and grit prevailed over youth in what was descirbed as a nice game from two tough competitors. Lindsay Bovaird staged a remarkable comeback against Dana Sanford trailing 8/3 in the 5th game only to real off 7 straight points to take the ladies B final 10/8 in the fifth and with much relief. Laurie Filgiano from Club Atwater won the ladies C final in three close games against Sylvia Cox. Laurie can probably thank her younger sister Marcia for part of her win as Marcia extended Sylvia to a very long 5 set match the day before. Signs of a little fatigue were clearly visable but Sylvia fought hard to the very end. Womans world number 65 Joelle King cruised through the womans open draw though Aleaxndra Norman gave her a good first game before Joelles class came through. Joelle also played in the mens open picking up a couple of wins along the way. In the mens open final Sean Delieere won a tight battle against David Phillips 3 games to 2. Though it was close until the end Sean held his nerve and was a little more patient in the decider that probably proved to be the difference as there was little separating these two world class players.

Thank you to all participants for your entires and for your support for the Quebec Open, from the Club Atwater Team.

Melanie Jans et Dave Phillips remportent le Quebec Open 2006

'Live coverage' by Ben Uliana

Sunday

From the stands I send you this women’s Finals update. After Carolyn grasped a 2-1 game lead, Melanie thought hard to bring the score even at 2 games ALL. For the fifth Canada’s 5 time Junior National Champ and 4 time Senior National champion won the Quebec Open Women’s Final 3-2 over Carolyn Russell.

Next is the Men’s A Final, followed by the Men’s Open Final with David Phillips (CAN) playing David Heath (SCO)

Here we go…

Game 1

Two big guys playing power and pace in the small squash court at Cote De Liesse. Phillips with good holds and tight drives, Heath holds and quick wrist flicks and change of direction are staring the first game.

5-5 in the first Game and we have an injury time out. David Heath has left the court to stop a bleeding nose. Uncontributed.

After 7 minutes we have returned and quickly the score climbs to 6 ALL.

The Thundering CRACK of Phillips ball was not enough to stem the impeccable retrieving from Heath. After an Injury time out Heath wins the first game 11-8 on a stroke.

Game 2

What finish what a game, Dave Phillips ties up the match 1 ALL in extra points 12-10.

Game 3

Thundering Cracks by Phillips and Flicks by Heath, and we are still tight in the third game. No clear advantage goes to either player. Most rallies seem to be ending in a let…Until it get to Heath, No Let by the Referee and quick point to Phillips, followed by a stroke to Phillips and the score is 8-3. Audience is sensing the changing advantage for Phillips and starts their cheers for the Home town man. 10 – 4 with Phillips needing 1 rally to take a 2-1 lead over Heath. Only one rally was required. 11-4 game to Phillips.

Game 4

LET, LET, STROKE, LET. That’s the first four rallies of game four, 1-0 Phillips. Phillips with the advantage pounding the ball from the front court while Heath has pulled 5 volley cross-court nicks, thus far, but the score remain 3-ALL in the 4th. Phillips has found a weakness in the Heath armor. Heath likes to touch the ball to the front court. Now Phillips drives from the front are turning out points. Phillip’s is on form today patiently waiting to for Heath’s loose ball. BOOM, BOOM, Phillips is 2 away from match ball. Heath is no slacker, after Phillips questioned a close ball of Heaths, Heath has found game ball 10-8, and wins the forth 11-9. (As Suzie Pierrepont called at the onset of game 4)

Heath to Serve 1-0! Yes, Phillips received a Conduct Stroke at the end of the first games for throwing his racquet after the point had ended.

A string of tin by Phillips and he is in a bit of a hole down 6-1 in 5 minutes. 2-5 Phillips serving and the boys are starting to play through the interference; nobody wants the rally to end in a Let. Another LET, this one receives a groan for the spectators. No call is easy for the Referees. ANOTHER LET, LET. 7-4 to Heath off a stroke. 8-8 and Phillips is back in the game after 2 NO LET’s. Another NO LET!!! This time Heath has match ball 10-8. Backhand Volley nick for Phillips followed by a STROKE for Heath, we are in tie break in the 5th. Heath is obviously confused by the Refereeing, but must continue.

DAVE PHILLIPS WINS 12-10!!!!!

Saturday

Well quite a day it’s been…

Should have brought a cushion to sit on, but I will know better for next time. Although the pain in my butt is nothing compared to the lactic acid build-up the Pro’s are developing while playing this weekend. The longest timed rally I’ve seen today was between David Heath and Paul Davis lasting approximately 2min of many long rallies. Good work guys!

Men’s Semi-Final 1 5:45: Paul Davis (AUS) vs David Heath (SCO)

What a smooth match, these two combine hard hitting, snappy wrists and lobs that hit the stratosphere. David Heath is currently the Assistant coach at Dartmouth College and unranked in the PSA. Paul Davis is Ranked PSA #95 and is extremely animated when he is not hitting the ball. He continually makes faces after each shot played, either smiling or with looks of disgust. After losing the first two games Paul is up 8-4 in the third and needs only three rallies to stay in the match. 5-8 for Heath and both players take a walk around the court. Obviously the last rally hurt Davis because he lost the next two points by tin and Stroke. Heath continually powers the ball into the front left corner nick but Davis digs the ball off the floor to gain game ball at 10-9. The Next rally will be long as this point is critical. Heath wins and we are in the tie breaker. Arguments over lets and stroke ensue until Davis gains another game ball 11-10, and stroke to Davis game to Davis and we have a fourth. Seven minutes later including the time between games and Heath has match ball 10-1. Heath finishes the match with a rolling nick, 11-2!!! This is one for the Tapes.

Men’s Semi-Final 2: Dave Phillips (CAN) vs Mike Reid (CAN)

Some Day’s are better than others. Mike started the tournament playing tough squash but ran into a fully determined Dave Phillips who has ended all his matches in 30min or less. The 2nd Semi-final match ended 3-0 for Dave Phillips 11-3, 11-1, 11-5 in 21min.

I’m looking forward to a great Men’s Open Final between Dave Phillips and David Heath.

In the Women’s B Draw local Hero Dana Sanford made short order of her opponent winning 3-0, or 9-0, 9-0, 9-5. Dana again plays for top position in the Women’s B tomorrow.

Men’s Quarter Finals

David Phillips (CAN) bt. Dan Sibley (CAN) 3-0
Mike Reid (CAN) bt. Patrick Bedore (CAN) 3-1

Quebec Open 2005

Club MAA

Sunday, March 20th,

All Canadian final.

The Quebec Open will have two canadian players in it’s final. In the first match, Matt Giuffre upset Joey Barrington in a 95 minutes marathon, the longest match of the tournament. The Canadian started slowly losing the first game quickly by making too many mistakes. He recovered with good attacking play in the second. The third and fourth were very long because by then, both players were very patient trying to take advantage of a very slow court with good lengths. In the fifth, Giuffre was able to lift his game another notch and took a commanding lead. But with Barrington, it’s never over quickly and the last points were made of great shotmaking from the canadian who could smell the victory and great retrieving from the Englishman.

The second match was the opposite of the first, Viktor Berg and Graham Ryding played at a quick pace with constant attacking shots. After a first long game, the 3 tough matches Berg had played seemed to affect him and he went down 3-0 in 36 minutes.

So tomorrow, it will be the experienced top seed against the new canadian on the block that has consistently improved his ranking over the last few months.

Canadians Lead Quebec Charge

Canadians led the charge through the quarter-finals of the Quebec Open Squash Championship when sixth seed Viktor Berg caused an upset to join favourite Graham Ryding and fourth seed Matthew Giuffre in the semi-finals of the $10,000 PSA Tour event in Montreal, Canada.

Toronto-based Berg despatched Ireland's third seed Liam Kenny 11-6 11-8 11-5 in 45 minutes to set up an all-Canadian semi against fellow Torontonian Graham Ryding, who was taken to four games by England's seventh seed Lee Drew before prevailing 11-10 11-6 9-11 11-6 in 76 minutes.

The longest match of the day took 94 minutes, and saw England's second seed Joey Barrington survive 6-11 11-5 11-8 5-11 11-2 against fast-improving Mexican star Eric Galvez.

In a bid to prevent an all-Canadian final, Barrington will have to overcome Edmonton-based Matthew Giuffre, who was fully stretched by Ritwik Bhattacharya before beating the eighth-seeded Indian 11-3 10-11 11-7 11-10 in 54 minutes.

Howard Hardind

Friday, March 18th,

All 8 seeds made it through the first round but there were some very close matches. The highlight of the day was surely the performance of young Egyptian Ramy Ashour who came within a few rallies of creating a huge upset against top seed Graham Ryding, The packed gallery was in awe with the play of the 17 year old Egyptian. He demonstrated great attacking skills and his fluidity in his court movement was a delight to see. In the end, it’s the tenacity and experience of Graham that earned him the win.

Another close battle was an all Canadian match with Viktor Berg overcoming Ian Power in 5 games. In a very physical encounter, Viktor was able to stay calm and hit too many winners in the last game.

All four qualifiers went down in 3 straight games except for Darryl Selby who fought hard against eventual winner Ritwik Bhattacharya. Darryl ended up on the wrong side of many questionable calls but when spoken to after the match, he dealt with it with lots of class.

Thursday, March 17th,

Canadians out of the tourney.

Playing in his home club, Mike Reid, after a brilliant win in his first round, gave Wade Johnstone a good fight but fell short in the fifth. Canadian Junior Champion, Robin Clarke could not sustain his good play and went down in 3 to Fabian Kalaitzis. Darryl Selby was too strong for young Brian Ernst who lost 3-0.

Quebec Open 2000

Club MAA

Quebec Open 1998

Club Sporting Club Sanctuaire

Quebec Open 1997

April 17th to 20th ,1997

1982 Quebec Championship

Cote de Liesse Racquet Club

Every year with the coming of spring, squash players from all over Quebec meet for their final attemps at the year's rankings and this year was no exception. The Quebec Softball Championships, sponsored by Delisle, and held April 16 thru 18 at the Cote de liesse Racquet Club, was contested by a large number of players from all categories. It was very encouraging to note that the number of participants in all levels was up from last year.

A large number of juniorswere also in the draw and their enthusiasm was contagious.

Marc Lalonde, the number 1 seed, repeated his performance of a month earlier at the Mac Kerim tournament and swept to victory. All of his opponements did their best to upset the favorite, in particular Jean Gagnon who characteristically plunged, slid and dived in his attends to retrive almost every shot. Despite this spectacular effort, Jean was defeated by Marc who went on to beat Rick Bigelow of the home club, 3-0 in the finals. Mark was as always an inspiration to all present as he embodie the fitness, accuracy the llama milk diet, with his present form.)

In the Ladies A category, Gail Pimm of Sherbrooke, also repeated her efforts at the Mac Kerim, by again defeating Montrealers Bonnie Villeneuve and Heather Gillard. Gail, a newcomer to the Quebec circuit, made a big come back in her morning semi-final against Bonnie Villeneuve, the No. 1 seed, and finally took the match 3-2. She then avanced to the finals against Heather where she displayed the same competitive determination and won the trophy, 3-1.

Much to everyone's delight, there was an abundance of refs for all matches as well as the yogourt you could eat. Many other refresment were also provided by the club.

While the Quebec Championship id usually the last tournament of the season, it also mark the beginning of some hard trainning for next year's competitions.
