Quelque 45 compétiteurs ont participé aux Championnats Québécois Junior Ouverts (Philip-Quaid) disputé le 12 avril au Club Mirabel. En plus des habitués de la région de Montréal et de la famille Blouin de Québec, on notait quelques nouveaux venus de la région de Hull-Ottawa. Rappelons que l'on prévoit tenir un tournoi provincial à la Sporthèque de Hull l'an prochain.

La meilleure compétition a eu lieu dans la catégorie -15 remportée par Maxime Blouin aux dépens de Julian Drobetsky. Après avoir remporté difficilement les deux premières parties 9-7, Maxime a quelque peu manqué de concentration et permis à Julian d'égaliser les parties. Dans la cinquième, Julian a réussi à remonter un déficit de 8-2 pour finalement s'incliner 9-7, vaincu par la fatigue. Mentionnons qu'en plus de jouer quatre matches de squash, Julian disputait également un tournoi de hockey. Bel exemple à suivre pour nos glorieux du Canadien déjà sur le terrain de golf.

Chez les filles, la compétition a été très chaude comme toujours entre Anne-Christine Lajoie et Geneviève Lessard. Tirant de l'arrière 2-0, Anne-C a monté son niveau de jeu d'un cran pour finalement l'emporter 3-2. Grande vitesse pour récupérer toutes les balles d'attaque de Geneviève, très peu d'erreurs non provoquées et pression constante en puissance sur le revers de Geneviève ont donné d'excellents résultats et du très bon squash.

Chez les garçons -19, Jason DeLierre a remporté facilement la victoire même si les deux derniers matches ont été étirés à cinq parties. Mentionnons l'excellente performance de Ben Marien qui a remporté la demi finale 3-0 contre Brad Baker.

This year's tournament attracted a strong field of Quebec's best age group and novice players. More than 50 competitors competed in 6 categories: Boys under 19, 15 and 13; Girl under 19; and two mixed novice categories. The attitude and compatitiveness of every player made the event a competitive and envoyable tournament for everybody who attended over the weekend.

The age group winner include Joshua Schwartz and Anne-Christine Lajoie. Both retain their titles in the boys and Girl U/19 categories respectively. Last year's winner, Schwartz played Chris Baker from the Huudson Racquet Club, appearing for the first time in the U/19 final. Schwartz overpowered Baker by not dropping a point in the final. Lajoie, from Club Mirabel, has been a winner of the Girls U/19 since the age of 13, and was the round robin winner over Geneviève Lessard from the MAA.

The others winners included Nick Taylor (Boys U/15) and Kyle Schiissler (Boys U/13), both from Club West Island. A special mention to all new squash players who participated in hte novice categories of U/11 and +/11. We all hopeto see you again next year.

David Phillips, Shaw DeLierre sure, but Joshua Scwartz? With the absence of Quebec's two big name junior stars, other impressive Quebec juniors were able to shine through at this year's Philip-Quaid Memorial, Quebec Junior Championships. Joshua Schwartz who has been working hard at his game over the last couple of years is stratind to build a reputation all of his own. Capturing the Under 19 crown without conceding a game, Joshu showed that he has the potential to become a force to be reckoned with in junior world. On the girl's side, Anne-Christine Lajoie, ranked forth in Canada under 16, captured the Girls Under 19 crown for the second straight year and also did do without dropping a game. Anne-Christine, who has been competing nationally for the last 4 years, first became Quebec Under 19 Junior Champion at the age of 13! Quebec continues to prove itself capable of producing some of the country's top juniors, the only thing missing is the depth.

Thsi year's Philip-Quaid Memorial, attracted similar numbers as it has over the past few years. Approximately 50 juniors competed in six categories: Under 19, 16, 14 and 12 on the boys side, a mixed 19/16 on the girls side and then a mixed Novice category. After Joshua and Anne-Christine, who won captured the under 16 crown by defeating Cavendish's Zachary Rath. Ben Marien from the MBSC continued his domination of the Boys Under 14 division by defeating his nemesis Nick Taylor 3-0, a reversal of last year's Under 12 final. Roger Hilton from the MAA defeated Daniel Schwartz in a hard fought battle to capture the Under 12 division. Two Mirabel juniors and future stars Patrick Walker-Geary (age 8) and Greg Stanton (age 8) contested the Novice final. Patrick fought back from a 2-0 after more than 40 minutes!

Special thanks to fellow squash pros Kenn Flynn, who sent 14 juniors from the MBSC, Darnley Holder, Yvon Provençal, Joffre Godin and David Philips for their support, for developing juniors and for encouraging them to compete in this year's Quebec Junior Championships.

Plus de cinquante jeunes compétiteurs ont participé au Championnat Québécois Junior Philip-Quaid disputé du 3 au 5 avril 1998 au Club Mirabel.

David Morgenroth de l'Ontario a terminé en premier chez les -19, Jason DeLierre a eu raison de Zachary Scwartch (3-0). Dans toute la catégorie -14, Zachary Rath a defait Trevor Lenoue (3-0). Chez les -12, Nicolas Taylor (fils du célèbre Ken) a difficilement eu raison de Ben Marien (fils du non moins célèbre Charles) par le pointage de 9-7 dans la cinquième partie du match le plus excitant du tournoi (et le plus éprouvant pour les parents).

Chez les filles qui ne comptaient qu'une catégorie à cause du nombre malheureusement limité de participantes, Anne-Christine Lajoie, du Club Mirabel, dans une reprise de la finale de l'année dernière l'a cette fois-ci remporté contre Dana Sanford du Club Hudson. Karleen Cooper, de l'Ontario a terminé troisième.

En plus des matchs enlevants, les juniors ont eu le plaisir de se mesurer au champion canadien David Philips dans des parties de cinq points. Pour chaque point marqué contre David, le junior recevait une balle de squash. Au grand plaisir des spectateurs et de ses adversaires, David a tellement donné un bon spectacle en gardant la balle en jeu qu'Andrew a failli manquer de balles.

Félicitation à Andrew Thompson, Lyle Goldsmith et toute l'équipe pour l'excellente organisation du tournoi. Merci également à tous les parents qui sont venus encourager nos juniors et qui de façon générale se sont bien comportés. (les parents, pas les juniors). Les jeunes peuvent être fiers d'eux.

Le Club Mirabel a été l'hôte des Championnats Québécois Philip-Quaid, du 21 au 23 mars dernier. Le tournoi, tenu après quatres ans d'interruption, a attiré cinquante juniors du Québec et de l'Ontario. Pour plusieurs des juniors du Québec, il s'agissait de leur première expérience dans un tournoi majeur.

Les vedettes du squash québécois, incluant les représentant des clans DeLierre et Schwartz, Dana Sanford, Anne-Christine Lajoie, Geneviève Lessard et Ben Marien étaient au rendez-vous. David Philips, junior numéro 1 au Québec, a disputé un match de démonstration avec Jamie Nicholls, un des meilleurs joueurs de l'Ontario. L'enjeux du match était un prix de 150$ offert par Darnley Holder, professionnel du Club Hudson. Phillips s'est amusé avec Nicholls en gagnant 3-0, en dépit d'un handicap de 7 points. Il a ainsi démontré pourquoi il est le joueur junior numéro 1 au Canada.

La profondeur était impresionnante dans toutes les catégories. Shawn et David DeLierre ont tenu une clinique de coups audacieux dans la finale chaudement contestée des moins de 19 ans. David l'aîné, est sorti victorieux en gagnant 3-1, et, apparemment a égalisé à trois victoires chacun la série à vie de finales entre les deux frères. Joshua Schwartz a exorcisé quelques démons alors qu'il a défait son adversaire Guy Thomas d'Ottawa 3-0 dans la finale des moins de 16 ans. Jason DeLierre, le troisième de la famille DeLierre à être en finale, est passé à travers la catégorie des moins de 14 ans sans perdre une seule partie. Jason a défait Zachary Schwartz 3-0 en finale. Ned Thomas a défait Ben Marien du MBSC pour enlever le titre des moins de 12 ans. Dana Sanford du Club Hudson n'a perdu aucun match pour remporter le titre chez les filles de moins de 16 ans avec une victoire de 3-2 contre Anne-Christine Lajoie du Club Mirabel. Geneviève Lessard du MAAA n'a perdu aucune partie dans la catégorie des filles de moins de 14 ans et a défait Cassie Bordignon du Hudson 3-0 en finale. Tristan Holder, sept ans, aussi de Hudson, a gagné les sept matchs qu'il a disputé pour remporter le titres des novices.

Despite a strong challenge by a much improved Scott Chapman (MBSC) Alex Doucas (MAAA) won the Boy's Under 19 Black Knight Junior Softball Championship 3 games to 1, as expected. Chapman came through a hard fought semi-final against David Stevenson (MBSC) to challenge Doucas, who has had a superb season. Stevenson in turn defeated Phil Samuel (CDL) in 5 exciting games to secure third place. Greg Lahey (Ottawa) placed fifth.

The Quebec Junior Softball event was sponsored by Black Knight and hosted by the Cote de Liesse Club, with the Rockland Sports Centre pinch-hitting with court time for the girl's events. Highlights of this year's tournament were greatly increased entries and the supremacy of the Butt family, in many categories.

Traditionally one of the established Clubs, MAAA or MBSC, have fielded the largest entries in the juniors tournaments. This year however, it was the Rockland contingent coached by profesionnal Robert Brooks which was most strongly represented. The majority of these entries were in the under 14 category and these players will represent a serious challenge to the established clubs in 2 to 3 years.

The Butt family from Toronto - Sajid, Sabir and their sisters Imrana and Sadia - Typified the ideal competitor and generally set the tone for the tournament. Sajid won the Boy's Under 16, Sabir won the Under 14, Imrana won the Girl's Under 16 and Sadia took the Under 19. These 4 were also in the lead off court, helping out with the refereeing and other chores.
