THE PHILIP-QUAID MEMORIAL - QUEBEC JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

WHO WAS PHILIP QUAID?

Phil was a lanky kid (6 feet at 15!) who was exceptional at Squash – in fact, a naturally coordinated player who played left-handed and possessed an unorthodox style. He first started playing at 8 years old – and it was obvious to his coaches that Phil had a special sense. He had a facility for opening up the squash court to his advantage - like a good chess player does on a chessboard. He studied the game, applied the lessons, developed mental discipline – and thus prepared, went on to excel in many events over the years. Montreal’s West Island district was where he had his buddies and where he played with the area’s toughest juniors. They traveled to many cities across Canada playing in Junior events – enriching their lives with the friendships that such activities invariably create.

The word super-kid could easily apply to Phil. An honour student at Selwyn House School, Phil was awarded the trophy for all-round distinction in Grade 8.  Highly intelligent, a champion debater, and a talented athlete, he enjoyed sailing, skiing, soccer, basketball, rugby and waterpolo, but was most passionate about squash.  A demeanor that was invariably easy-going, friendly and helpful endeared him to all – including those younger than him for whom he always had time.

He died August 4th, 1988, in a swimming accident when he was only 15 years old – on a day he was to meet his friends for some on-court training. Many years ago, Squash Quebec thought he should be remembered with a special tribute – and so this event - the Quebec Junior Squash Championship, was named after him.

The 2010 Phillip-Quaid Memorial Quebec Junior Open tournament was hosted by Glen Wilson at the Atwater club in Montreal on March 20th, 2010.

In the Boys U19 category there were no surprises as Ottawa’s 16-year old Kyle Ogilvy played the entire draw without losing a game.  Quebec’s Mathieu Diab met Kyle in the final.  Kyle’s speed and retrieving ability was sufficient to take the match 3-0 over Mathieu.  The 3/4 match was particularly interesting to watch as 14-year David Baillargeon took an early 2-0 lead against Calvin Wren.  In the 3rd game David had 4 match balls but Calvin didn’t lose focus and fought back to stay in the match winning  the 4th game while David was noticeably unhappy with some referee calls.  In the end Calvin took the 5th game to win the match by a score of 3-2.  In this same category Quebec’s Chris Defour cruised easily through to win the consolation final against Josh Renaud 3-0.

In the girls U19/U17 category there were also no surprises as Montreal’s Marcia Filgiano did not lose any games in the 4-player round robin.  Cassidy Smith took the runner-up position.

In the Boys U15 category David Baillargeon, who had also played in the U19 category, ended up in the final against 2nd seed Patrick Seguin-Morin.  Despite some good  rallies in the early games David took the match with relative ease over Patrick 3-0.  Benjamin Brassard showed his usual determination and patience to win the 3 / 4 match against Sebastien Boucley, 3-2.

Again no surprises in the girls’ U13 category.  Gabrielle Renaud continued to show strong progress and had no difficulties through the 4-player round robin not losing a game.  Runner up was Lea Provencal.

Gatineau’s Raphael Landry improved his Quebec Junior ranking by several positions by winning the trophy in the Boys U13 category.  Both Raphael and Tommy Scott played in the U13 and U15 category, only to eventually meeting each other in each draw.  It was the U13 that counted.  Raphael took an early lead 2-0 but Tommy was able to fight back in the 3rd.  Raphael allowed Tommy to gain some confidence in the 4th but it wasn’t enough as Raphael won the match 3-1.  Maximilien Godbout continued to show steady and noticeable progress in his Squash skills taking the 3 / 4 match by a score of 3-2.  Gatineau’s Dominic Wren won the consolation final against Griffen Tokarsky.

2000 Quebec Junior Open - Philip-Quaid

Club Mirabel

This year's tournament attracted a strong field of Quebec's best age group and novice players. More than 50 competitors competed in 6 categories: Boys under 19, 15 and 13; Girl under 19; and two mixed novice categories. The attitude and compatitiveness of every player made the event a competitive and envoyable tournament for everybody who attended over the weekend.

The age group winner include Joshua Schwartz and Anne-Christine Lajoie. Both retain their titles in the Boys and Girl U/19 categories respectively. Last year's winner, Schwartz played Chris Baker from the Huudson Racquet Club, appearing for the first time in the U/19 final. Schwartz overpowered Baker by not dropping a point in the final. Lajoie, from Club Mirabel, has been a winner of the Girls U/19 since the age of 13, and was the round robin winner over Geneviève Lessard from the MAA.

The others winners included Nick Taylor (Boys U/15) and Kyle Schiissler (Boys U/13), both from Club West Island. A special mention to all new squash players who participated in hte novice categories of U/11 and +/11. We all hopeto see you again next year.

1999 Quebec Junior Open - Philip-Quaid

David Phillips, Shaw DeLierre sure, but Joshua Scwartz? With the absence of Quebec's two big name junior stars, other impressive Quebec juniors were able to shine through at this year's Philip-Quaid Memorial, Quebec Junior Championships. Joshua Schwartz who has been working hard at his game over the last couple of years is stratind to build a reputation all of his own. Capturing the Under 19 crown without conceding a game, Joshu showed that he has the potential to become a force to be reckoned with in junior world. On the girl's side, Anne-Christine Lajoie, ranked forth in Canada under 16, captured the Girls Under 19 crown for the second straight year and also did do without dropping a game. Anne-Christine, who has been competing nationally for the last 4 years, first became Quebec Under 19 Junior Champion at the age of 13! Quebec continues to prove itself capable of producing some of the country's top juniors, the only thing missing is the depth.

Thsi year's Philip-Quaid Memorial, attracted similar numbers as it has over the past few years. Approximately 50 juniors competed in six categories: Under 19, 16, 14 and 12 on the Boys side, a mixed 19/16 on the girls side and then a mixed Novice category. After Joshua and Anne-Christine, who won captured the under 16 crown by defeating Cavendish's Zachary Rath. Ben Marien from the MBSC continued his domination of the Boys Under 14 division by defeating his nemesis Nick Taylor 3-0, a reversal of last year's Under 12 final. Roger Hilton from the MAA defeated Daniel Schwartz in a hard fought battle to capture the Under 12 division. Two Mirabel juniors and future stars Patrick Walker-Geary (age 8) and Greg Stanton (age 8) contested the Novice final. Patrick fought back from a 2-0 after more than 40 minutes!

Special thanks to fellow squash pros Kenn Flynn, who sent 14 juniors from the MBSC, Darnley Holder, Yvon Provençal, Joffre Godin and David Philips for their support, for developing juniors and for encouraging them to compete in this year's Quebec Junior Championships.

1998 Quebec Junior Open - Philip-Quaid

Club Mirabel

1997 Quebec Junior Open - Philip-Quaid

Club Mirabel

1984 Quebec Junior Open

Despite a strong challenge by a much improved Scott Chapman (MBSC) Alex Doucas (MAAA) won the Boy's Under 19 Black Knight Junior Softball Championship 3 games to 1, as expected. Chapman came through a hard fought semi-final against David Stevenson (MBSC) to challenge Doucas, who has had a superb season. Stevenson in turn defeated Phil Samuel (CDL) in 5 exciting games to secure third place. Greg Lahey (Ottawa) placed fifth.

The Quebec Junior Softball event was sponsored by Black Knight and hosted by the Cote de Liesse Club, with the Rockland Sports Centre pinch-hitting with court time for the girl's events. Highlights of this year's tournament were greatly increased entries and the supremacy of the Butt family, in many categories.

Traditionally one of the established Clubs, MAAA or MBSC, have fielded the largest entries in the juniors tournaments. This year however, it was the Rockland contingent coached by profesionnal Robert Brooks which was most strongly represented. The majority of these entries were in the under 14 category and these players will represent a serious challenge to the established clubs in 2 to 3 years.

The Butt family from Toronto - Sajid, Sabir and their sisters Imrana and Sadia - Typified the ideal competitor and generally set the tone for the tournament. Sajid won the Boy's Under 16, Sabir won the Under 14, Imrana won the Girl's Under 16 and Sadia took the Under 19. These 4 were also in the lead off court, helping out with the refereeing and other chores.

1983 Quebec Junior Open

Ville-Marie Squash Club

Transit strike and temperatures of -25°C weren't the only upsets to hit the Quebec Junior Hardball Championships, sponsored by Baush & Lomb (Canada) at the Ville Marie Squash Club, on January 15th to 17th. In the 18 & Under, unseeded David Stevenson (MBSC) defeated the fourth seed, Scott Chapman in the quarters, and then upset firtst seed Alex Doucas in a hard fought semi, 3-2. Stevenson then fell to Chis Griffin of Upper Canada College in an exciting final 15-3, 15-10, 10-15 and 15-10.

Alex Doucas withdrew from the consolation in favour of playing in the Senior Quebec Hardball Championship, and therefore was not placed.

François de Brahant proved his first place seed in the 16 & Under event by taking a thight 3-2 match in the final against John Hall of T.C.S.C.C.. Bishop College School fielded a large entry in the 16 & Under; their players showed the greatest improvement over previous performances and Balwyn Evans took fifth place.

With no Ontario entries, the 14 & Under was dominated by the local clubs. Keith Flavell of the MAAA used strategy and accuracy to defeat a hard-hitting Andrew Mackie of the MBSC 3-1. Matthew Taylor (MBSC) won over Greg Angus (MAAA) in the Consolation. Jeremy Fraiberg took fifth. Jeremy playing up from his 12 & Under category, will be a face to watch in the future. In fact, he took that event, no-contest.
