2011 Canadian Men’s Team Championship
OTTAWA Shawn DeLierre of Brossard picked up where he left off at the end of last year and Alexandra Norman of Montreal won a five-game thriller as Quebec won the gold medal at both the men’s and women’s national team squash championships which concluded Sunday in Moncton, N.B., and Calgary.
At the women’s tournament in Calgary, two of Canada’s top players clashed in the Quebec-Ontario final. In the second game, with Quebec trailing 0-1, Norman defeated Samantha Cornett of Ottawa 11-7, 8-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7.
Geneviève Lessard of Montreal won the deciding match over Katie Patrick of Toronto 11-4, 12-10, 11-6. In the opener, Marnie Baizley of Toronto defeated Olga Puidgemont of Montreal 11-3, 10-12, 11-7, 11-7.
In the third place match, B.C., defeated Manitoba 3-0 with Emma Parke, Melanie Jans and Rebecca Fouchard winning the matches for the victors.
Alberta 1 defeated Alberta 2 for fifth place and Nova Scotia beat Saskatchewan 2-1 for seventh.
In Moncton, DeLierre, one of Canada’s top international players last season and ranked second in the country, helped his province to a victory over Alberta in the final while Manitoba beat Ontario for the bronze.
2010 Canadian Men’s Team Championships
OTTAWA Alberta won the men’s and women’s titles on Sunday at the Canadian team squash championships which were held in Calgary and Montreal respectively.
In Calgary, number-one seed Alberta defeated Manitoba in the championship final. The Alberta team members were Matthew Giuffre of Edmonton and Graeme Schnell and Grayson Witcher, both of Calgary. The Manitoba team was comprised of David Glass, Josh Struthers and Evan Mancer, all of Winnipeg. Third place went to Team Ontario which defeated Quebec in the bronze medal match 3-0. Team Ontario consisted of Dane Sharp, Fred Reid and Chad Dommasch.
In Montreal, Alberta defeated Quebec #1, the defending champions, 2-1 in the final round robin match to claim the title with a 5-0 record. Team Alberta consisted of Susie King, Kelsey Souchereau and Claire Fern, all of Calgary. The Quebec #1 team finished with a 4-1 record, good enough for 2nd place. Team Quebec #1 members were Alexandra Norman, Ogla Puigdemont and Genevieve Lessard, all of Montreal. 3rd place went to Team Manitoba who finished with a 3-2 record, the team members were Alix Younger, Ashley Malenchuk and Tara Chawla.
The Canadian Masters Team Championships are this week January 15-17 in Saskatoon.
2009 Canadian Men’s Team Championship
The 2009 Canadian Men’s Teams Championship was hosted by Charlottetown, PEI. This year’s team was made up of Ian Power at #1, Mike Reid at #2 and Jason Delierre at #3. Out of thirteen participating teams, Quebec entered seeded third. We had a bye in the first round and took on PEI #1, who was coming off a first round upset over Saskatchewan, in the quarters. All three of the team members won their matches handily 3-0.
In the semis, we faced the second seeded team from BC. Although it took each of us four games to finish the match, the victory never appeared in doubt and we walked away with a 3-0 win. In the final, we took on the top seed, Ontario. Mike Reid led things off with a 3-1 win over Ontario’s Matt Serediak. Ian Power went on against Robin Clark with a chance to secure the victory. He went down 2-0 early but fought back to level it at 2-2.
Although he did well to fight back, he didn’t have much left for the fifth and went down 3-2. So the packed PEI crowd got what they wanted, a final that went all the way. Jason Delierre was left with the pressure of playing the deciding match against Dane Sharp. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to match his highly motivated opponent and he lost 3-0.
We did our best but came up a bit short against a tough team from Ontario. For the first time in a few years, Quebec had to settle for second place. But we’ll be back, eager to avenge our defeat, in 2010.
