Rules and Referees
Ever wonder how to become a certified official... well, here it is, in 2 easy steps;
ATTEND THE SQUASH CANADA OFFICIATING CERTIFICATION CLINIC... usually an all day affair on a Saturday or Sunday involving a lecture with the help of a slide series and video presentation, followed by a court demonstration & practice. The Canadian Program is one of the finest in the world.
TAKE THE EXAMS... usually the same day in the context of a tournament An 80 question, multiple choice exam, as well as an on-court exam in a match situation.
THAT'S IT...You then become certified as a "D-4" level referee, and you move up through the ranks towards "A" as you gain knowledge and experience through the years.
WHY BOTHER?... Well, there's as many reasons as referees, but among the most often quoted are the sheer challenge of having to make what you hope are correct decisions in a very short time while correctly applying the rules and guidelines. There's a unique pleasure, whether it's appreciated by the players or not, in contributing to a fair outcome of a match. When you ref, you put yourself on the line... You are, in a small way, living life on the edge. OK, OK, it's not skydiving or bungee jumping, but it sure beats the hell out of just sitting there! Get a bunch of people together and give us a call!
