Just a week away from his 22nd birthday, the world No26 from Helsinki now meets Egypt's 19-year-old world junior champion Kareem Darwish, who also upset the seeding by dismissing England's 4th seed Stephen Meads 15-5 15-6 11-15 15-4 in the other semi-final.

Both players have already claimed PSA Tour titles this year - Tuominen, as a qualifier, the Apawamis Open in the USA in New York, and Darwish the Maadi Open in his home country in March.

Shellcast Classic 1998

The tournament was organized once again by the Club Profesionnal Ken Flynn, and his Co-Chairmen of Nicki Lang and Allan Case, as well as many dedicated Club members.

The tournament attracted over 180 entries in the amateur draws men and women, making in the biggest event in quebec again in 1998.

Shellcast Classic 1997

The second annual Shellcast Classic Squash Tournament was held from February 12th to 17th at the Montreal Badmington & Squash Club. The tournament commitee headed by squash pro Ken Flynn organised a first class event. With generous support from the sponsors, namely Shellcast, National Bank, Sun Life and Templeton, as well as patrons from the club, the event attracted over 220 entries. World ranked players like Rodney Eyles #2, Chris Walker #4, Steven Meads #19, as well as the top Canadian players Jonathon Power #6, Graham Ryding #27, Gary Waite were there also. This year for the first time the event had a womens pro draw featuring Canada's best.

Everything seemed to be going fine, the draws were progressing nicely, the food and entertainment laid on was excellent and the crowd enjoying the pro games. Then came the semi-finals match ups Eyles v's Ryding and Power v's Walker. the two Canadian players were the underdogss starting out but you never know in sport. To great joy for the home crowd both matches were 3 games to 0 and the Canadian players had caused a major upset and an all Canadian final. In the womens section the top seeds went through as expected Melanie Jans and Marnie Baizley. The ladies final was a very tight match with the number I seed Melanie Jans winning it 3 games to 1. The mens final also gave us an upset a very poor and lack luster performance by Power gave Graham Ryding the championship with a 3-0 scoreline and left everybody wondering what was going on. Power did not seem to be moving as easily as normal and had asked for medical advice after the first game. Power continued the game but was never really in the match.

A sponsors and players reception followed and a great time was had by all. The event overall was a great success and enjoyed enthusiastically by the squash community of Quebec. A dreat deal of thanks should go to the committee and the sponsors. Next year's event is sheduled for February so make a note in your diarys because entries are limited and the word is out what a great tournament it is.
