2009 Robert-Kornitzer Memorial Tournament

2009 November Kornitzer Squash Tournament Review

This year’s 12th annual Robert Kornitzer Memorial Squash tournament was held at Club CDL on the weekend of November 6 to 8, 2009.  75 players from Montreal, Quebec City and Granby participated.   Proceeds from the tournament were donated to Heart and Stroke Quebec.

The draws were divided into Men’s A, B, C, D and Women’s B/C and D.  Friday night pizza was sponsored by Restaurant Le Beaujolais on Montée de Liesse.   A full day of squash on Saturday was followed by dinner provided by Mountain Street Kitchen, along with music for dancing, courtesy of Eric Thibault (hardware) and Alex Zivic (music arrangements).

Continental breakfast was provided to players and volunteers on Saturday and Sunday morning.  Kaféxpress, courtesy of Alex Zivic, provided free cappuccino, espresso, hot chocolate, and other gourmet coffees throughout the tournament weekend – players and spectators alike took advantage of this delectable sponsorship and enjoyed being “wired”.

For the first time ever, tournament volunteers raised money selling raffle tickets.  The raffle draw was held Saturday night after dinner, where some exciting prizes were won – including Club CDL memberships, Tickets to Cirque du Soleil, Black Knight Squash Racquets and Bags, Asics Court Shoes, Wilson Tennis Racquets, Gift Certificates from Boutique 40/30, and Gift Certificates from Restaurant Casa Cacciatore.  A sincere thank you to all our raffle gift sponsors and volunteers -- almost 400 tickets were sold, raising an additional $1500.00 for Heart & Stroke Quebec.

Thanks to Dave Runnings for doing the draw.  And where would we be without our certified referees from Squash Quebec?  They volunteered their time and expertise (Pierre Cardinal, Gerry Poole, Paul Gagnon, and Dave Runnings).    A hearty “thank you” to our key sponsors – Black Knight Canada who provided the tournament prizes and royal blue tournament t-shirts, and Redcliff-Metivier who generously contributed to the Heart & Stroke donation.

Thanks to the CLUB CDL administration (Laurie Lanfer, Jason Prizant, Eric Newton and all the reception staff) who made the tournament participants and spectators feel welcome.   A special thank you to the volunteers (Ian Starr, Dave Runnings, Marie-Therese Lai-Tung, Rainer Ullman, Gary Grant, Alex Zivic, Eric Thibault, Viano Oghenekeve, Rob Fuchs and Aldo Raffo) who helped where needed. Thanks to our resident professional photographers -- Paul Fisher and Alan Taylor – who documented the weekend for prosperity. This tournament was a success because of everyone who participated, especially those who volunteered their time and played a key role on “the team”.

2009 Robert-Kornitzer Memorial Tournament

2009 Kornitzer Squash Tournament review

This year’s 11th annual Kornitzer Memorial Squash tournament was held at Club CDL on the weekend of Feb. 13 to 15, 2009. 65 players from Montreal, Quebec City and Gatineau participated. All proceeds from the tournament were donated to The Quebec Heart and Stroke Foundation.

The draws were divided into Men’s A, B, C, D and Women’s A. Friday night pizza was sponsored by 21st CENTURY FOOD. A full day of squash on Saturday was followed by a pasta dinner dance with DJ. Semi-finals and finals played out in the early afternoon on Sunday. Continental breakfasts were provided to players and volunteers on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Thanks to Dave Runnings for doing his usual flair creating an excellent and well-organized draw. The professionalism of the tournament was bumped up a few notches by the great turnout of the certified referees from Squash Quebec who volunteered their time (Barry Faguy, Gio Picollino, Pierre Cardinal, Eric Plamondon, Gerry Poole, Paul Gagnon, and Dave Runnings). The tournament was once again sponsored by Black Knight Canada under the “Black Knight Circuit”. Restaurant Casa Cacciatorre, CLUB CDL and BK provided the prizes.

Thanks to the “new” CLUB CDL administration (Jason Prizant, Eric Newton, Josh Schwartz and all the reception staff) who put out the red-carpet welcome mat to all tournament participants, and helped make this year’s tournament a great success. A special thank you to the volunteers (Laurie Lanfer, Ian Starr , Dave Runnings, Mary-Therese Lai-Tung, Rainer Ullman, Gary Grant, and Rob Fuchs) who helped manage a very-well organized and smoothly run tournament.

The 2007 edition of the Robert Kornitzer Memorial Tournament hosted by Club CDL had the highest level of participation since its inception. With 155 players registered, the tournament started on Thursday Feb 15 and finished late Sunday afternoon.

This year’s event also featured a PSA Challenger. The Saturday night match between Jamie Crombie and Shawn Delierre delighted the 75 plus spectators with the match lasting well over an hour.

The Saturday night match was followed by a dinner/dance, with many of the players dancing well into the night despite the early 8:45am start on Sunday morning. Each year proceeds from the tournament are donated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Quebec.

A special thanks to the referees who volunteered their time, the tournament sponsors (Black Night, Genatec, Metivier Grassi, Grolsch), our devoted and tireless volunteers (Ian Starr, Jenny Milne-Smith, Teresa Gibson), and all those who participated in the tournament.

Once again Nautilus Plus (Cote de Liesse) put on a great tournament this weekend with the hosting of the 'Kornitzer' 2003. The blizzard didn't stop the 90 plus players from dancing the night away on Saturday night nor was anyone late for their 9:30 matches on Sunday morning. It must have been all the good food and drink courtside that kept them coming back. Every year the proceeds from the tournament are donated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Quebec. Thanks to all who participated and we look forward to more good times and great squash next season.

The tournament was well attended this year with 93 participants including three players in the Men's Open with world rankings. It had a flavor of Australian Open with four Aussies in the quarter-finals.

The Men's Open category was won by Ian Power from the MAA while the Ladies Open winner was Louise Lefevbre. Charles Ste. Marie, the Men's Open consolation winner, had the shot of the tournament with a fake overhead smash, behind the back winner for match ball.

At the Saturday evening dinner/dance, Jill Slayden was the lucky winner of the draw for an Air Canada air fare. Thanks to all who participated and helped support the Heart and Stroke Foundation

Big dinner and more beer!

On March 9-11 was held the Robert Kornitzer Memorial Tournament at the Côte-de-Liesse Nautilus Plus in St-Laurent. A total of 57 players registered for "The best deal in squash tournaments again this year" according to Graham Gerrardy, the organizer. I must say that he is right. At $40 + tax, there was food court side all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Two for one drinks all weekend, a dinner dance on Saturday evening with a live 20 piece orchestra and lots of prizes (An airline ticket, seven racquets, jackets, watches, quilted shells, rugby shirts, golf shirts, sport bags, goggles, money and much more). On top of that, the organizers raised $500 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. What else do you want ?

By the way, they also played some squash between beers. Darren Barclay, faster than ever, defeated David DeLierre 3-0 in the A final. The men's B final was a family affair as legend Ken Taylor lost 3-1 against his step son Steve Leroux. On the women's side, Sue Dufresne won the A round robin and Clemencia Castillo took the B.

2000 Robert-Kornitzer Memorial Tournament

Squash enthusiasts assembled, on March 10th, for the 3rd Annual Robert-Kornitzer tournament held at the Nautilus Plus Cote de Liesse Club. This tournament is held in the honor of Robert Kornitzer, a noted squash and racketball player at the club. Part of the proceeds go to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

The action was very tough on the court, and even better off the court as the Saturday night big band party played until 2AM and an Air Canada flight to anywhere in the world was given away (I won't tell you who won, you'll have to ask). On the court, Montreal native and Vermont resident Peter Schulman, scored his first tournament victory by beating Dan Dorsey 3-2 in the hotly contested final. There was absolutely, positively, not ever one bit of arguing with the referee.

The organizing committee and Côte-de-Liesse pro Alan Taylor congratulate all the players for participating and look forward to more good times next year. Lastly, the trophy for the winner is the size of a fire hydrant, so for any of you who want their name engraved on a REAL trophy, come and play next year.
