DeLierre takes the GoodLife Open final in five

reports
A very focused Shawn DeLiere today won the GoodLife Open in Ottawa
beating Eric Galvez in 5 games in a great shot making match in
front of almost his hometown fans!
Shawn lost the first game with what seems his customary slow start. It is
almost as if he feels his opponent out, before stepping up his game.
Shawn in the second & third game started to move really well getting on to
Eric's short balls quickly & counterattacking.
Shawn also opened up his game hitting a variety of winners from the mid
court putting Eric off balance. In the fourth Shawn hit three unforced
errors, more than he had hit all match up to that point, letting Eric back
into the match to take the fourth game. In the fifth game, with the score
at 5-4, Eric scrapped his knee resulting in an injury time out to get
patched up. Once back on court Eric did not recover his intensity & Shawn
won the fifth 11-4.
21-Oct, Semi-Finals:
Shawn DeLierre (Can) bt Bradley Ball (Eng)
3-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-8 (60m)
Eric Galvez (Mex) bt David Phillips (Can)
11-9, 11-7, 11-6 (37m)

Shawn DeLiere, after losing
the first game, came alive hitting winners from all over the court leaving
Bradley shaking his head. Shawn won the next 3 games. Bradley's comments
after the game? he was just too good today!?
Eric Galvez also advanced bringing David Phillips fine run in the
tournament to an end. Eric's court coverage was exceptional and he was able
to counter attack David's short shots which had worked so well for him in
previous rounds.
As a result David was made to work much harder & fatigue took its toll.
Galvez, full of energy, ran to a 3/0 victory.

reports
Undoubtedly the match of the night
was between Shawn Delliere & hometown boy Robin Clarke.
Robin looked nervous in the first game being very tentative with his drops
resulting in him clipping the tin on numerous occasions giving Shawn the
first game. In the second Robin settled into his game, playing patiently
waiting for his opportunity to take the ball in short which paid off
resulting in him leveling the match.
The third game saw Shawn take advantage of loose play by Robin, hitting
some great winners to take a 2-1 lead. In the 4th game Robin took a 9-6
lead with the hometown crowd definitely behind him. All credit to Shawn
who played some great attacking squash to pull level.
Both players traded winners from that point on, Shawn finally taking the
match after 71 minutes.
David Phillips had a relatively easy 3/0 win over Scott Arnold tonight
here in Ottawa, Bradley Ball & Eric Galvez also had 3/0 victories.

Qualifiers Night
in Canada
Heather Wallace
reports
David Phillips is on fire! David caused the biggest upset tonight,
beating Columbia's Miguel Angel Rodrigez, no.3 seed. David began where he
left off last night, striking the ball with great precision. His volleying
& the way he cut the ball in short put Miguel under such extreme pressure
resulting in straight games win, 3/0.
Robin Clarke & Ryan Cuskelly are on quite a run here in
Ottawa as well. Robin steamrolled Nick Kyme of Bermuda, the no. 5 seed,
3/0, in 28 minutes while Ryan beat No.6 seed Zimbabwe's Jesse Engelbrecht
in a very tight match 3/2. Engelbrecht went behind 0-2 playing error prone
squash. He cut out the errors to draw level at 2/2 only to lose a very
tight 5th game 13/11.
Scott Arnold beat fellow Australian Steve Finitsis, no. 8 seed to
make it 4 for 4 for the qualifiers in wins tonight, a very rare
occurrence. Arnold won 3/1.
England's Bradley Ball had a comfortable win over Canada's Andrew
McDougal 3/0. The no.1 seed Canada?s Shawn DeLiere after getting
off to a slow start against Jullian Illingworth of USA, dropping the 1st
game, won 3/1.
The no. 2 seed, Mexico's Eric Galvez beat France's Julien Balbo 3/0
in a match played with speed, power & deft touch at the front of the
court. The match between Columbia?s Bernardo Samper & England's
Laurence Delasaux was very tight in the first 2 games with Samper just
coming out on top to take a 2-0 lead. In the 3rd game, Laurence took
control, moving Bernardo all over the court to win it. In the 4th game
Samper jumped out to take the lead against a tiring Delasaux & did not
relinquish control, winning the match 3/1.

Clarke wins in 5
in front of hometown fans!
Heather Wallace
reports
Tonight's first match was the 1st upset of the night with Canadian
David Phillips beating France's Mathieu Castagnet by 3/0. David struck the
ball superbly tonight controlling the match right from the start. He hit
his short straight shots with such precision, many hit for outright
winners causing a lot of frustration for Mathieu. David did not let up
with his pressure & comfortably won all 3 games.
The second match between Australian Ryan Cuskelly & New Zealander Martin
Knight was a fast paced & tenacious affair with Ryan coming out on top,
3/1.
The third match featured hometown boy, Robin Clarke vs England's Dave
Barnett. Dave upset Wade Johnston the previous evening so went into this
match the slight favourite! Robin got out to a fast start finishing both
the 1st & 2nd games strong. Dave turned things around in the 3rd & 4th by
dominating the mid court to tie the match 2-2. In the 5th Robin got back
to playing a lot more straight & taking the ball into the front court
short & straight. Dave made more errors off the straight balls & coupled
with Robin using the straight short balls to better effect, Robin won the
5th comfortably 11-4.
The final match, again considered an upset saw Australian Scott Arnold
beat Canada's Ian Power relatively easily, 3/1 after dropping the first
game.

Three
Canadians Advance
Heather Wallace
reports
Three Canadians, Ian Power, David Phillips & Ottawa's Robin Clarke all
advanced through to the second round of qualification at the GoodLIfe
Squash Open here in Ottawa today. All won comfortably by 3/0 scores.
Undoubtedly the match of the day was between Welshman Rob Sutherland &
Aussie Ryan Cuskelly. The players traded the first four games to tie 2-2 &
then the fifth game was very much like an English Premier football game of
this season, some errors, some great play & some dubious refereeing
decisions. Cuskelly came out on top, 11-9 in the 5th.
