IN MEMORIAM ALEX DOUCAS
JUNE 28, 1964 JUNE 11, 1989 When Alex Doucas died in a boating accident on June 11th 1989, the North American squash world lost one of its most talented players and refreshing personalities. The 24-year-old Doucas, who played with verve and distinction throughout his six-year pro career, was both extremely popular among his fellow competitors and one of the most entertaining performers on the WPSA tour. Born near Montreal on June 28, 1964, Alex was on a tennis court by age three. This early attraction to racquet sports, buttressed by a healthy supply of clearly evident natural athletic ability, enabled him to win numerous tournaments and Junior awards in tennis, badminton and squash, where he won a total of ten USSRA and CSRA National Junior titles and reached the finals of the ’81 WPSA Junior Championship before dropping a fifth-game overtime to fellow Canadian prodigy Paul Deratnay. After turning pro in autumn of ’83, Doucas capped off a solid season by stringing together three straight five-game upsets (over Tom Page, Aziz Khan, and Ned Edwards) to win the Mennen Cup Wild-Card (qualifying) tournament. This noteworthy achievement, climaxed by the 15-14 finish to his thrilling Edwards final, brought Alex to the prestigious Mennen Cup competition (where he would go on to the semis), and clinched his WPSA Rookie Of The Year designation for the 1983-84 campaign. During the next several years, his tournament participation was limited due to injury and his educational commitments at McGill University, but in 1986-87 Doucas reached the semis of five WPSA events and proved his versatility by earning a top-ten ranking in both singles and doubles. In spring of 1989, he teamed up with Ned Edwards to win the Philadelphia Elite Doubles, the final doubles event on the 1988-89 schedule. In addition to these formidable and multi-faceted athletic achievements, Alex was an Honor Roll student, a gifted pianist, and a valued worker in family business, which manufactured automation process controls. His insouciant personality and relaxed manner made him a gallery favorite, and he exuded such a lively and energetic spirit that even now, years after his fatal accident, it seems difficult to believe that such vitality could have been snuffed out on one ill-starred summer afternoon. The WPSA Board of Directors recently voted to rename its annual Rookie Of The Year Award The Alex Doucas Award. The Board took this action partially as a tribute to Alex’s squash accomplishments but, more importantly, in an attempt to insure that the memory of this outstanding young man will always be an integral part of the WPSA picture. 2009 Alex-Doucas Memorial Tournament
|
The 2009 Alex Doucas Junior Tournament took place Saturday Oct 24th and showcased our province’s young talent. We had 30 entries overall and kids from all over, Quebec City, Gatineau, even Ottawa. It’s always nice to see new faces and encouraging sign to see our sport growing. In the girls -13, Gabrielle Renaud from Ottawa was a last minute entry due to a late cancellation and took advantage of her opportunity. She was able to pull out the win over MAA’s Lea Provencal in a very close 5 setter. We can expect these two players will have a bright future in years to come, and many more matches like this one. Tommy Scott from the Atwater club defeated Adam Ackle 3-1 in the boys -13 final. Both finalists overcame some strong competition in the round robin portion to get to the final, however Tommy‘s length and pace was too much for Adam to handle on this day. The top two seeds met up in the boys -15 final. Max Adshead, an Ottawa resident, was noticeably smaller in stature but made up for it with his racquet skills in a big way, beating Patrick Seguin-Morin 3-1 in the final. Honorable mention also goes to James Kierans who finished 3rd and Eric Cote for winning the consolation placing 5th, both promising MAA juniors. Marcia Filgiano from Club Atwater captured the girls -17 title by beating both Olivia Tory and Dominique Smith 3-0. The match of the tournament belonged to Matt Diab and Calvin Wren who put on a spectacular final for the crowd. It was a seesaw match throughout, both players split the first 2 games 11-8. Matt squeaked out the 3rd 11-9 after trailing midway through, but Calvin fought back in the forth winning again 11-8. The fifth game went back and forth with very little separation in score. The rallies were only getting better, tighter and faster as they approached 11. In the end, Calvin pulled off the victory winning 11-9 in the fifth and claiming his first Alex Doucas boys -19 title. Thanks to all players, parents and volunteers for your participation as well as making this tournament a success. David De Lierre Results

2007 Alex-Doucas Memorial Tournament
The Alex Doucas Memorial junior tournament kicked off the season once again. We were treated to some exciting squash throughout the day which featured Quebec's young hopefuls. The boys U-13 final showcased some of our provinces youngest talent as James Kierans and David Baillargeon met in the final. James came out swinging but David proved too strong and out hit his opponent to win 3-0. The boys U-19/U-17 saw John Lamont capture his first U-19 title by playing smart patient squash against Shawn Filion and winning 3-0. We rounded out the girls draw by combing all categories and having a draw of 8. Lindsay Boivard stole the show and the title by narrowly beating Brigitte Tousignant in the Final. Marcia Filgiano took the girls consolation by defeating Carolyn Mercier. Thanks to all those who participated and the parents for supporting our event and junior squash. See you again next year! 1998 Alex-Doucas Memorial Tournament
